Octet · a semi-digital piece of furniture
Octet is an on-line table where messages and other luminous animations can be displayed. This piece of furniture outshines his first function to become communicating and can be controlled via sms or internet.
I was working on new communicating objects, when I realized that in my apartment, the most communicative one was the living room table… Indeed, we were all leaving notes on it for the other flatmates. So I decided to imagine what would be a table that could combine that with the use of sms or internet...
This project, made in 2004, was designed as a "manifesto project" more than an actual "ready-to-launch" product. It's proclaiming and assuming it's tinkered aspect, showing off the wires and the technic part under a beautiful light.
The image above shows what really was my inspiration at that time, the Blinkenlights project I've seen in Paris as well as the "hello" display of my stereo. Oh yeah, I’ve always loved this low-tech, pixel graphics, and I was completely fascinated about how the artists of the CCC were able to mix it into our real life.
Octet is built upon a 64 computer-controlled Led's matrix. It can display pure low-tech-style animations.
A functional prototype of Octet was built-up thanks to the ADN design group, at the Ensci. Find some more pictures down or check-out the cool video I've made.
